Hypothesis 1: Gold with full credit use

Assume you would have made the same purchases with every partner anyway and can use every segment in full: €80 + €60 + €50 + €240 = €430 of personal value. €430 βˆ’ €240 fee = €190 calculated surplus before points. This is a reproducible scenario, not a general valuation.

Hypothesis 2: Platinum with 3 lounge visits

Assume you fully use every credit for spending already planned: €200 + €150 + €200 + €100 = €650. As an editorial hypothesis only, value 3 lounge visits you would otherwise buy at €25 each: €650 + €75 βˆ’ €720 = €5. The assumed lounge value is not a source fact or published market value.

How to make the decision

  1. Start with the annual fee, not a benefit list.
  2. Value each credit at no more than what you would have spent with the required merchant without the card.
  3. Deduct expiring monthly or segmented amounts and the extra administrative effort.
  4. Value lounge access and supplementary cards only from your actual usage.
  5. Compare the remaining personal value with the fee and with the no-card alternative.

Face value is not personal value. Merchant restrictions, time segmentation and expiring portions can sharply reduce usable value.

The no-card decision

β€œNo card” is an editorial branch of this methodology, not an American Express source fact. It is appropriate when you do not pay the balance in full and on time, would make extra purchases merely to use credits, or when conservative utility does not exceed the fee and effort.

Method and evidence binding

The editorial team created compact immutable extracts of selected facts from two private captures. On every request, the gate recomputes the extract hashes, binds the comparison exactly to them, and checks a separate repository review attestation, source registry, roles and time boundaries. Private capture digests are provenance only; runtime does not recompute them against the full source content.

Limitations

  • Welcome bonuses, promoted total benefit values, detailed insurance cover, individual eligibility and credit decisions are excluded.
  • Acceptance, possible usage fees and signed-in account terms require a separate check before deciding.
  • This publication is a general comparison method, not personalized financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

Are credits worth the same as cash?

No. Count no more than what you would otherwise spend with the required merchant, then account for segmentation and expiry.

Why can no card be the best choice?

A rewards card creates no utility when interest, fees, extra purchases or administrative effort exceed conservatively valued benefits.

Why are welcome bonuses excluded?

They are time-sensitive and do not show whether a card remains worthwhile after year one. This comparison covers ongoing decision criteria only.
