Miles & More: Navigating the New System
Miles & More has implemented dynamic pricing for Lufthansa Group flights and revised partner award charts. The changes have brought both challenges and opportunities for award bookings.
Key things to know for spending M&M miles:
- Flight Awards on Lufthansa Group Airlines: Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings. (Now with dynamic pricing).
- Flight Awards on Star Alliance Partners: Access a vast network of airlines like United, Singapore Airlines, ANA, Turkish Airlines, etc. (Revised fixed award chart).
- Flight Awards on Other Airline Partners: Some non-alliance partners are also available.
- Upgrades: Use miles to upgrade your flight to a higher cabin class.
- “Meilenschnäppchen” (Mileage Bargains): These are temporarily paused for June 2025. They are expected to return in July 2025 for partner airlines (like LOT, Luxair) and some Lufthansa Group airlines (like Discover Airlines, Brussels Airlines), but not for core Lufthansa/SWISS for the time being.
- Hotel Stays & Car Rentals: Possible, but often lower value than flights.
- Worldshop: Redeem miles for merchandise, usually not recommended for maximizing value.
Current Award Structure:
- Lufthansa Group Flights: Dynamic Pricing - Mileage costs vary like cash tickets based on demand, route, and timing. This can mean better deals for off-peak economy flights, but premium cabins on popular routes tend to be more expensive. Multiple fare types (Light, Classic, Flex) are now bookable with miles.
- Partner Airlines: Revised Fixed Award Chart - Generally more expensive than the previous structure.
Class | Europe to North America | Europe to SE Asia | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Economy | 50k (was 60k) | Varies | Some routes cheaper, some pricier. |
Business | 125k (was 112k) | 200k (was 142k) | Generally more expensive than before. |
First Class | Higher than before | Higher than before | Significantly more expensive. |
My General M&M Spending Wisdom:
Priority: Flights & Upgrades
Flights and valuable upgrades are generally the best use of M&M miles. Avoid using them for merchandise.
Book in Advance
Especially for popular routes or if trying to snag limited Meilenschnäppchen deals.
Compare Value
Always compare the miles cost + taxes/fees against the cash price of the ticket to ensure you’re getting good value.
